The 2017 favourite breed of dog in New Zealand has been announced, and it’s no surprise that the winner is the lovable, enchanting and gorgeous pooch the Labrador Retriever.
What is it about the Labrador Retriever that makes it such a popular dog choice for many families around new Zealand? We are about to tell you!
Firstly, what is the history of the Labrador Retriever?
Once upon a time the Labrador Retriever was known as the “St Johns Dogs” and was one of the most favoured dogs in the United States. The Labrador Retriever came from Newfoundland, Canada and was trained to help out their fisherman friends by jumping into the icy cold waters to haul out their fishing nets to shore.
Why do Labrador Retrievers make great family pets?
It’s easy to see why Labrador Retrievers make the all time family pet list and it is due to their kind, caring, lovable and outgoing nature. Their friendly and easy going manner makes labrador retrievers an ideal dog around families with children. They are easy to train, love swimming and will play fetch as long as you will allow it.
What does it take to look after a Labrador Retriever?
These wonderful animals are friendly dogs that love being around the family and enjoy having company around them the majority of the time. Labrador Retrievers are very active dogs. Therefore they require daily exercising. They enjoy a good ole weekly brushing to remove any loose and dead hair, and if you have a swimming pool on your site you will need to keep an eye on your loveable pooch as they too enjoy a refreshing dip!
What are the downsides to a Labrador Retriever?
There are not too many negatives to owning a Labrador Retriever but ensure you keep your snack cupboard locked, as they do enjoy food and will eat as much as they can get their paws on! If you are out all hours of the day and night, then a Labrador retriever may not be your best choice of breed at the moment as they do love the company and like to have it the majority of the time.

Statistics from the New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC), the national association for breeders, reveal that out of 8000 purebred puppies registered last year (2016), the runner-up breeds are:
- German Shepherd – A loyal and intelligent medium-large sized working dog. Originating in Germany and often works for the Police or Military Service.
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier – Is a medium-sized short-coated dog that can make a loving, reliable and
fearless pet. - English Bulldog – A medium sized breed that often gets referred to as an English Bulldog or a British Bulldog, is a docile pup that can make a friendly companion.
- Golden Retriever – A family favourite the Golden Retriever is a large sized breed of dog. They are brilliant dogs that are loyal and make good family pets as they can be patient and gentle with children.
- Border Collie – Is known as a working and herding dog and displays an intelligent, keen and energetic temperament.
- French Bulldog – Also recognised as ‘The Frenchie’ is a small breed that is playful, affectionate and easy going. The French Bulldog can make a fabulous family friend.
